Reviewer's comments
"A good, solid level with excellent design and very clever details. The four necessary artifacts can be found in any order, and I was at least able to find enough Knots to buy the necessary scroll and grenade launcher. The stages are very well decorated, and the timers, while not very generous, are feasible. The cameras and PDAs were helpful, and the texturing was perfect. There may be too many enemies at the end, and sometimes you have to return to the same places after using the time lever, but the portable teleporter detail helped a lot to avoid backtracking. So far, this is the best BtB level I've played. Recommended!" - Jose (26-Mar-2025)
"a very nice egypt level, i love the leveldesign and the stunning day and night time travel mechanic. a must play 10/10" - Raider278 (12-Mar-2025)
"Could be the first one you play, as it has a tutorial. After that it's digestible as well, with cute cozy settings and several plot twists. All the time, sufficient information is delivered to the player's brain, so it doesn't ask unnecessary questions but can focus on solving the level instead. It feels like the final artifact should do something more, as the ending is a tad underwhelming. I also feel like, despite of excellent aestethics, you won't remember much of this level. Too basic and not beyond enough?" - DJ Full (01-Sep-2024)
"This is a very engaging level with a number of unique features in it that you will not have seen anywhere else before, primarily the way how you get to control time and switch repeatedly between a day and a night setting, which allows you to handle different tasks. The stunning map is being explored quite systemically with solid guidance via the PDA that always tells you kind of what to do, but stilll actually then lets you figure it out by yourself for a nice sense of accomplishment. The merchant system is a creative addition too, as you collect knots to buy items you then need for progression. Not sure if the tutorial intro level was really needed, but those 15 minutes already set the scene a bit as they include the first of several timed runs and it is not an easy one and needs some preparation work. Plenty of traps to navigate along the way too, but all rather fair and never too challenging. I was not a huge fan of the ending drama, which is very nicely set in scene, but still is a pure slaughter of waves of enemies, which by that time is no match for Lara's weapon arsenal anyway, but that is really a very minor complaint about an otherwise highly addictive level to play. Missed all the secrets, so will have to go back here one day. Do not miss out on this one! (100 min, 0/3 secrets)" - MichaelP (01-Sep-2024)
"Has Lara finally gone too far? This time, she’s looking for the power to rule over time and her goal is to become the new goddess of time. And she’s supposed to be the heroine? Historically, British people having too much power hasn’t worked out too well for the rest of the world. That aside, this is one of the better levels in this year’s BtB competition. It starts with a tutorial for some reason, which is both wholly unnecessary (this is the eighth level for me) and kind of charming in a way. It reminds me of the tutorial in Tomb Raider Chronicles. Once past that, the level starts for real. The goal is to find four keys. The level stays pretty linear until around the halfway point, when you reach the Temple of Time and find a lever which allows you to control time. I assume that’s what it does, anyway – Lara calls it a “time lever” at one point – but what it really does is turn the rain on or off. As far as time travel goes, that’s fairly unexciting. We’re not exactly talking Ocarina of Time here in terms of ambition. Let’s be honest, we’re not even talking that one level in Titanfall 2. It does lead to a handful of reasonably creative puzzles, though, mostly involving changing the water level. The downside is that getting around is a bit confusing, since some paths are closed off depending on the weather. I don’t know if that’s for gameplay reasons or design limitations. Fortunately, the level is fairly compact and you keep returning to the same central areas, so I was never lost for long. Lara also writes down where key items are on her PDA, so your goals are usually clear. It’s kind of nice to have them written down as a reminder, but I did feel like she somewhat gave away the solutions to puzzles a bit too often. The level also has an in-game shop. It’s kind of fun to search for knots (the currency), but it doesn’t really amount to much. There are two key items you have to buy, and then you can spend the rest of your knots on ammunition, which you’ll need for the final showdown. It’s a nice-looking level overall, although it could have used a bit more variety. Changing the weather also makes it nighttime, which makes for a nice change of atmosphere, but you’re still just running through the same temples and corridors. The level ends with a final battle against a bunch of enemies, which is *fine*, but it still feels anticlimactic since Lara’s carrying an artifact that can control time at that point and I was expecting a bit more fanfare. Surely something a bit more thematically relevant would have been possible. It almost feels like the author ran out of time, which would be kind of ironic. Or maybe they just decided to end the level right then and there, as I finished it at one hour almost on the dot. Maybe the real goddess of time was the author all along." - Magnus (31-Aug-2024)
"What I liked about the level: 1) The hanging lanterns in the rainy night sky look very elegant. 2) The change of weather is a very cool effect. 3) The use of the item to transport is unique and clever. I’ve never seen it done before. 4) It’s just a small thing but I love how the flyby camera starts just as Lara is pushing the floor lever. Very cinematic. 5) I loved the dust at Lara’s footsteps. 6) I liked collecting knots and buying stuff. It makes the player want to explore. 7) I really liked how the pushblocks were underwater at first so the puzzle could only be solved during sunlight. 8) When picking up items, I liked that the names were shown. What I didn’t like or thought could be improved: 1) I was able to reach the end of the world and not that this is such a bad thing because I just love going where the player is not supposed to but thought to mention it anyways. 2) The underwater run for an item was very tough, getting stuck on corners and doors. 3) The clue for the Ankh shows up in the PDA only after finding it behind a closed gate. Clues to help direct the player towards the area of the item would have been more helpful. 4) I suppose it is customary to have an exciting ending, but not fond of onslaughts of enemies en masse as the vehicle for that. Conclusion: I had to consult the walkthrough frequently (thank you, Treeble) but for me this is not a bad thing at all. The length of the level is just right, just enough to get used to the level yet leaving the player wanting more. I think the builder could do well to create a sequel using the same ideas we all got used to here (for me, only near the end hence wanting more). Due to the tight timed runs, not suitable for beginners." - Lizard Queen (25-Aug-2024)
"This level starts off with a short prelude in a series of small, interconnected courtyards, until Lara reaches the obelisk courtyard / market square, which forms the hub of the level. At first, the multiple doorways opening off this courtyard can seem a little daunting, but once you start exploring, the gameplay flows quite smoothly and logically. I was stuck only a couple of times, and in both cases, it was due to my own lack of observation. I was initially frustrated with a particular timed run/swim that seemed impossible to do in the very little time allotted to it – but the frustration vanished as I realized (thanks to a PDA hint) that it was supposed to be impossible as is, and that I had to use the level’s best aspect – switching between day and night – in order to change the layout. This combination puzzle-and-timed run wound up becoming my favourite task in the level.
The textures and lighting of this level are simply spectacular – the level looks gorgeous in both the day and night time. The architecture is maybe a little simplistic – the majority of the level takes place in a series of small/medium-sized courtyards, with very few grand areas or imposing architecture, with the slight exception of the goddess’s temple. Nonetheless, this is just a small nitpick.
Apart from that, the only negative thing I can think of to say about this level is that the boss fight at the end feels like overkill (pun intended), with Lara having to fight multiple waves of enemies. Still, as long as you conserve ammo throughout the level (which isn’t hard, as there are so few enemies before the boss fight) and maybe buy some extra from the vendor in the marketplace (which is a cool gameplay idea), the boss fight is doable.
Overall: A lovely, intelligent level that manages to strike a good balance between challenging and player friendly. Highly recommended, especially as an introduction to BtB2024." - Mytly (23-Aug-2024)
"The setting here is mostly an open-air temple complex. There are two levels here but the first is very short, and parts of it are in the second map anyway, so it seems to be a late addition for technical reasons rather than a planned split, so I'm treating it as one level. The scale is relatively small, but there's a lot of detail and good object use. The highlight is the use of flipmaps, with a major one that completely changes the look of the level very smoothly, and it really enhances the textures and lighting too with how natural it is, given how easily they can turn into a technical mess.
An interesting thing at the start is that there's a sort of tutorial for the BTB package moves, with text and interactions introducing you to each move, and the starting challenges are engaging enough that it doesn't get in the way if you already know what to do. After you get to the main level you are soon introduced to a new mechanic in the form of a shop that you can buy things from using certain items; finding some of those is well used to both start you in a small area and give you a quick tour of the important areas. The layout is cleverly executed to gradually open up to be more non-linear as you go, and by the time it's fully open you have a good idea of where you generally need to go. This is enhanced by the flipmap mechanic mentioned before that means you essentially have two versions of the map to explore with clever use of consistent changes and environmental hints to make it clear what the most important things to look for are. All this means it's not too difficult despite all the new mechanics, with only a couple of potentially tricky timed runs and a bloodbath of enemies at the ending (although you are more than equipped to deal with it by then) despite little combat before then. I guess the flipmap concept limited it in that regard, but, despite the shooter finale, I couldn't help feeling the ending came a little suddenly when I just ready for it to ramp up with some final story developments and non-combat challenges. A great level full of creative ideas, and I guess leaving me wanting a little more is a testament to it's overall quality." - Mman (22-Aug-2024)
"Congratulations on this very pleasant raid! Thank you for gifting it to us players. I thoroughly enjoyed this raid, and found it technically at the peak of this medium. My only partial dislike was the story. It is very basic, general and not very compelling. I was hoping on some final turn of events where maybe Lara would get burnt from meddling with power, but there was only a simple (if nice) set of enemy waves. The bread and butter of this level is the great design at every aspect and every turn. It is very fluid and ingenious, with enough details and unique little mechanics to blossom into a full game. Another level to expose Lara to the dangers of meddling with time would've made it perfection. However, tempus fugit!" - MigMarado (21-Aug-2024)
"Each time I think I've played my favorite BtB level, I play the next one and have to revise my thinking. Goddess of Time is simply a marvelous playing experience, with so many unique touches that I couldn't possibly list them all. And by the way, I was beginning to wonder whether there was some BtB rule requiring the level to begin with Lara sliding down somewhere. This was the first level I can recall where Lara actually started off with feet firmly planted. Anyway, the environs here are stunning throughout, the concept of buying weaponry and extra ammo was a deft touch, and the puzzles and timed runs are engaging without ever becoming frustrating. I also liked that transportation mechanism that saved considerable backtracking time where you have to switch between daylight and darkness. I had just enough accumulated firepower to weather that enemy onslaught at the end. I can't think of a single reason to deduct a single point from a single category, so I won't. Highest recommendations." - Phil (21-Aug-2024)
"And thus the BtB competition ends on a high note for me. There are many things to do in a non-linear order here and actually a pretty wide area but things are not obscure and the order seldom matters so it's kind of a big playground game I rather enjoyed, spiced up with neat timed runs, trap sequences and a gigantic boss fight at the end. The game is also very player friendly giving you a short introduction to the new moves, perhaps this level should be actually played first in the competition order. On the other side, it tends to be a tad too easy at times and a few more involved puzzles and tasks (other than the huge day/night puzzle which was of course excellent!) had rounded things up some more. The visuals are technically faultless, texturing and lighting are very good, but the level felt a little too much two-dimensional and the architecture is not totally impressive. As you can see on the grades, these are only minor things to complain about in a really excellently designed and fun level, which took me 50 minutes with all three nice secrets found. Thanks to all the builders out there for a truly fantastic competition!" - manarch2 (19-Aug-2024)
"I liked the whole concept of this level –the flipping from day to night and back again and the fun aspect of collecting knots to exchange for goods at the friendly local salesman’s shop. It certainly has made good use of the textures and objects provided in the package and, as one of the shorter and less challenging of the levels, it provides a welcome break. Positively a holiday – at least up to the boss ending so don’t neglect to buy all the ammo you can afford. Highly enjoyable." - Jay (16-Aug-2024)
"An attractive level featuring all the classic Egyptian tropes, as well as a modern marketplace setting. Add in a high object density and the level gives off a distinct Persian vibe compared to most of the others in this year's BtB. Excellent atmosphere as we get to play in daytime and nighttime settings; you switch from one to the other so as to access new areas etc. Gameplay is very good, as far as it goes - maybe I would have liked a bit more. Generic bossfight to end." - Dick (11-Aug-2024)
"I know it's extremely early to be calling favorites, but this is definitely among my favorite TRLE experiences in quite a while now. It's got a lot of LCTOO in it, with a lever shifting between a sunny day and a rainy night and how that affects the entire environment, the switch enables you to explore the same areas in different ways. The author was kind enough to insert text prompts not only for the "new" features you get in here, but also has Lara take notes of certain places she can't get to for the lack of specific gear. All in all it's just such a well rounded experience, while I still have another fourteen levels to go and the forums rightfully claim the bar was set very high this year, I definitely see this as one of the top contenders. 90 minutes, 2 secrets. 07/24" - Treeble (11-Aug-2024)
"This is a formally near-perfect level with tutorials for virtually everything that matters in the form of easy to read text messages, PDA, visual and camera hints, primitive money, fast travel (uhh, you’re missing out, High Priest!) and: it’s one of the very few levels in the BtB24 competition with the crawl-roll, which alone deserves an extra point... Along with the well-directed gameplay, all this makes this level exceptionally player friendly. (Another amazing detail: On picking up an item, it is displayed not only in object form, but in text and quantity as well – no more menu scrolling!)
The accessability is limited, at best, by the map itself: While the level shows that you don’t need a huge huge map or multiple levels for expansive gameplay concepts, the fact that it takes place entirely whithin a temple complex, which is very horizontal and looks rather similar whichever direction you go (at least for the casual player), can – despite the introduction of fast travel - make the tasks seem a bit confusing at fist and you can wander the map quite a bit (I’d still call it exporation rather than backtracking), especially if you’re looking for the very well hidden secrets. But it never gets excessive, because the map is relatively contained. This may be the only thing this level lacks (although only in a subjective way): Since the (other) top contenders in this competition made some CRAZY long, nested and/or complex level sets, I kind of expected another scenery change in this level that diddn’t happen.
***
Conclusion: Feels like a perfect first level to an imagenary offical game if the developers actually cared about the the players. Not the most spectacular, but maybe the most diligently designed (almost „german“ in a stereotypical sense, LOOL) level in this competition - a mostly calm and most satisfying raid with engaging puzzles that you should not miss! Duration: short medium (~1:30 h) | Difficulty: medium | Rating: strong 9 / 10 / 10 / 10" - evinaru_2 (11-Aug-2024)
"Two of my biggest bugbears are Timed Runs and having to go back and forth in levels... but the builder here has miraculously made level containing plenty of both of them and made it enjoyable for me hahaha! I was engaged throughout and this level had some pretty neat mechanics like the day and night states, as well as fast travel back to the switch to switch between the two states also a vendor to buy items from using currency you gain through exploration. Really enjoyed my time with this one and can't recommend it enough! Strong contender in my eyes!" - Feats (03-Aug-2024)
"Well designed, but relatively straightforward gameplay. Always like levels with time- shifting and the knots quest for merchant goods was a nice idea. Landscaping/atmosphere good but maybe not having the wow factor of at least one other entry. Apart from the panthers and a few scorpions, the enemies all came in a rush at the end. Should be in the 5." - Adrian (29-Jul-2024)
"A very successful game. It was interesting and there were plenty of enemies. I got to explore beautiful landscapes. And I didn't feel like I couldn't play anymore. I quickly wanted to play more. Clear and engaging. I think this is my favorite this year :)" - LionGirl_90 (27-Jul-2024)
"A beautifully designed level that leaves nothing to be desired. The architecture is very good designed, the background music is well chosen, the actions are varied but not too difficult, the lighting is almost perfect and there are plenty of hints as to what to do. You won't get lost in this level. I really liked the change from day to night and with the ‘Quick Travel’, with which Lara can beam herself into the room where the day/night switch is, the gameplay doesn't suffer at all. I didn't find the game particularly straightforward, but the good guidance means you'll have no problems getting on. Highly recommended." - nad (26-Jul-2024)
"This looks to be one of the runaway winners in this extremely high-quality contest. It's undoubtedly my favourite so far, and my first four-tennee. I was tempted to give it the equivalent of a 9.75, to leave a little wiggle room for the remaining 12 entries I still have to play, but I see others have ventured ahead of me anyway so I followed suit. Everything about this level is just worked out so right. The striking architecture, the gorgeous textures, the neat gameplay mechanics and the involving yet player-friendly gameplay. There's plenty of varied puzzles, acrobatics and timed runs, but there's also a wonderful concept of allowing Lara to switch time in order to complete different tasks in the temple area. Also, while there may be a bit of backtracking, it's never tiresome and the builder has graciously provided a pendant artefact to allow Lara to quickly teleport back to the main temple. Another nice idea is the merchant that trades Knots for useful weaponry and ammo. It's all brilliant constructed, and a must-play." - Ryan (19-Jul-2024)
"Packed with a variety of well balanced tasks and strong visuals, this level brings some good ideas too. The highlight is changing time from day to night and performing different tasks within the same map. A well executed change. There is a bit of everything: exploration, timed runs, puzzles, fights. But most of all there is a player friendliness everywhere. Exploration is rewarded with 'Knots" that can buy things from the merchant, there is an item in our inventory that gets us straight to the temple of time to change time fast, the PDA opens straight at the last page and many other little details that show player consideration and make this level not only a very good one, but also really fun to play. Hightly recommended." - billie2001 (14-Jul-2024)
"A really great BtB entry. At the beginning we have an area with a small tutorial which is very pleasant. Then we come to the main hub of the level. I really liked the layout of the map and how everything was connected. The gameplay is very engaging with lots of exploration, traps, parkour, puzzles, combat etc. The concept of changing the daytime which alters different rooms is phenomenal and I really loved it. The design is top-notch as well. A very good usage of textures, nicely done lighting and architecture. All of this creates a wonderful atmosphere. This game is really well-done and I highly recommend it to everyone." - BlackWolfTR (09-Jul-2024)
"Amazing level. It looks great and there is a really good flow to gameplay without a single dull moment. The game includes plenty of exploration, excellent platforming and timed runs mixed with traps, and inventive puzzles. A central puzzle involves a temple of time where you can change time from day to night. During the night, rain floods certain areas, whereas those same areas are drained during the day. The builder has also provided an item which allows you to quick travel to the temple of time from any location. This came very handy as it removes the need for backtracking that would be tedious otherwise. I don't really have any criticism since I thoroughly enjoyed every part of the game. This is tomb raiding at its best." - Samu (05-Jul-2024)
"Bugs/Functional Issues
  • A raising block activated by shooting a gem may have collision issues after toggling day and night, but this is unlikely to affect players who will probably just make use of it right away.
Disliked
  • I had made note of a wall that could be shattered with the grenade gun later on (near a boulder ramp), but I was dissapointed that I couldn't re-enter that area - all the doors were closed for good, and even a timed lever had dissapeared. I'm guessing it was a secret so this didn't affect the main gameplay much.
Liked
  • I randomly chose this as my first foray into the competition, and this entry did a nice job easing me into the mechanics of the game at the beginning.
  • Of course, the defining aspect of this level is the temple of time, where Lara can toggle the level between day and night. This does things like change water levels, toggle which doors are open and closed, and so on. The level itself becomes one big puzzle with this mechanic and I appreciate the attention to detail put into it.
  • A merchant is used to incentivize exploring the area to gain spending power. Two of these purchases are mandatory to proceed, but it is nice that you can keep collecting more to buy extra ammo.
  • All that ammo comes in handy at the end of the game, which throws Lara into a long combat sequence. While I might think it was a little too heavy-handed, I still appreciated the climatic ending to the adventure.
  • In addition to the above, there are also a good amount of traps and timed doors to make things interesting.
  • I have a suspicion that other entries will outshine this one in terms of architecture, but the visuals are still very well done. The obelisk courtyard in particular was inviting for exploration.
Time: 1 hour 17 minutes | Difficulty: Medium | Rating: 8.75/10 - Very Good" - JesseG (05-Jul-2024)
